Top tips for participating in surveys

  • Most surveys are dominated by multiple-choice questions, grids, etc. And that data is important.

However, surveys often miss critical information. Think of the survey as

  • Most surveys give an estimate for how much time you will need to complete it. They are not always accurate.

Plan to allow additional time for freeform answers. These are often the most valuable input you can provide to the researchers.

  • Well designed surveys always provide free text fields where you can share more - whether in relation to a specific question where the options may not be sufficiently inclusive, or at the end of a section or of the survey.

The information you share in these fields may be your most important contribution to the research.

  • If there is a list of options and none of them apply to you, there may be an “other” option. If so, make sure to type in your alternative (if allowed). If you are not allowed to, find a free text field later in the survey to give feedback on any question that you felt was problematic.

  • You are the expert in your lived experience.

If you feel that the survey does not allow you to share the most important aspects of your experiences on the subject matter, the researchers may simply not know exactly the right questions to ask or the options to offer.

Find an opportunity in a comments field to tell them whatever you think it is most important for them to know.

If there are no free text fields or they are not large enough for you to share, write up your information and email it to the research sponsor.
